Jay Promotes Anti-Smoking Campaign with Grandma

Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou and his grandmother took part in an anti-smoking campaign and shot a video to discourage young people from smoking, a charitable organization said Tuesday.

The campaign launched by the Fubon Cultural & Educational Foundation and the John Tung Foundation is targeting mainly school children.

Chou, named as one of the most influential figures in Asia for 2009 by CNN, said at a press conference that he has never smoked as he is disgusted by the smell of cigarettes and thinks not smoking “is just way cooler.”

Smoking is not an excuse for relieving stress or seeking inspiration, according to the superstar, who added that taking exercise and chewing gum are better choices.

The grandmother of the pop singer said none of her family smoke and that young people should stay away from cigarettes

“Do not smoke, just be yourself, I stand by you,” Chou says in the advertisement.

In addition, Chou cited a line written by himself — “you don’t need cigarettes to prove your confidence, to show your glamor or relieve stress” — in the footage.

The eight-minute video clip, a radio advertisement and posters featuring the pop singer and his grandmother will be available at schools from Wednesday to tackle the issue of teenage smoking, the John Tung Foundation said.
