Perhaps many people have already written about the wonders and benefits of the call center industry: how it has been providing generous pay, perks and privileges to the twentysomethings, or how it has provided jobs to thousands of Filipinos all over the country.
These are the known facts. But what about the unknown bits and pieces that make up a call center?
Oftentimes, things “unknown” are interpreted to mean scary or ugly or even taboo. In the call center industry, however, it does not need to have always a negative connotation. So I am writing to share with everyone some unknown facts: anecdotes, procedures and other crazy stories that make an entire industry. These are basically experiences someone inside the industry encounters almost on a daily basis that may shock, disturb or simply amuse.
Here then is a chronicle of my not-so-ordinary, five-year, call center experience.
Fact No. 1: The call center is the new church of the gay religion. Work in a call center for just one day (or night, since most call centers are on graveyard shift anyway) and you will meet dozens of gorgeous, uh, men. They can be divided into three groups: (1) the homophobic straights (these are the guys who would pulverize over-aggressive gay men in public restrooms), (2) the curious straights (their primary preference are women but when enticed or seduced by gay men, they give in), and (3) the certified gays, who can be sub-categorized into two groups -- the peppermints, a.k.a. “Pa-MHIN-Ta,” (discreet, still-hiding-in-the-closet gay men, and the flambouyants who either cross-dress or are just too loud and proud of their homosexuality).
Fact No. 2: The call center industry is the breeding ground for “college bosses.” Gone are the days when a typical boss was an old, fat, balding guy who ordered everyone around and asked anyone to fix him a cup of coffee. In the call center industry, you get to meet very young bosses whose ages range from 22 to 25 years. They are definitely not the classic “The Devil Wears Prada” bosses, instead they are your carefree, fresh-from-college bosses who love to party and drink Starbucks coffee as if it’s water. Oftentimes, these bosses get to where they are not because of their superior skills and intelligence but because of their great “talent” to smother their own bosses with praises and compliments and their ability to kiss butts.
Fact No. 3: The call center industry is slowly turning into a haven for the “plastics.” The movie “Mean Girls” glorified the “plastics” as portrayed by Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams. They are basically persons who do not show their true colors, and most of the time they engage in backbiting.
Working in a call center exposes you to the world of “plastics.” Beware of those who treat you extraordinarily nice, those who appear too friendly, because they are oftentimes the same persons who say the unkindest things about you behind your back. Once I took an elevator, with two colleagues whom I will just call Gorio and Tekla. We made small talk and I heard Tekla say, “Gosh, Gorio, you’re so funny talaga…” and ended with a sweet, melodious laugh. Gorio laughed with her and got off the elevator. As soon as the poor guy was out of earshot, Tekla looked at me, made a face and said, “Gosh, Allyn, I hate that guy! He is so 'pa-bibo'… taking out our boss for cocktails just to get promoted. He’s so undeserving! Duh!”
I wanted to ask Tekla, “Wasn’t it just seconds ago when you were cracking jokes with Gorio? And now you’re telling me you hate the guy?” Like, duh!
Fact No. 4: The call center industry is the modern-day Garden of Eden. Remember it was in that garden where Adam and Eve met and fell in love, and now the call center is a paradise for lovers. It is where single men and women meet, work together and fall in love. It is also where married men and married women meet, work together, fall in love and leave their wives or husbands. Morality and social obligations are often overlooked, if not, deliberately forgotten as lust triumphs completely.
Fact No. 5: The call center industry is a ticket for foreign travels. Most call center companies nowadays include training abroad as part of the job offer to entice the best applicants. True enough, there are call centers that send their employees to places like United States and United Kingdom on all-expense-paid trips. There are so many stories about young men and women who had the wonderful opportunity of traveling overseas, thanks to generous companies.
These are just some of the many things that very few people know about the call center industry. In writing about them, my intention is not to expose or mock people working in the industry or expose some ugly, hidden truths, policies or procedures. I am merely writing about the experiences I had while working in a call center. After working in the industry for five years, I think I can say I know its ins and outs. Indeed the industry is worth venturing into, as it promises an unbelievable and magical journey.

The Holiday
I hate that I missed this when it was still running in movie houses. It took me just yesterday to watch the movie. It was a very good and feel good movie. Love the cast specially Jude Law cause he’s so hot, and I would like to note that Jack Black was insanely funny.
What I love the most was it’s unusual and unique premise. Two women find that changing address for the holidays can change their lives. Amanda, a movie trailer editor from L.A., just broke up with her boyfriend. By this means, it goes to say that she wanted to stay away during the holidays. On the other hand, Iris who’s from England is a writer in a newspaper who so expert about unrequited love. Her ex-boyfriend and co-writer is getting married and seemed to realize that he never really love her.
Here are two women, desperate to go somewhere else to forget. Amanda managed to find Iris’ cottage and sent an instant message to her. They both agreed that by tomorrow, they would switch homes. And yes indeed, Iris went to LA and Amanda to England. Iris was absolutely flattered by how big Amanda’s home is. While Amanda, was like in a state of culture shock and had a hard time finding the cottage.
Iris met Miles, a movie music composer who works with Amanda’s ex. Then she met Arthur, one of the greatest living writers of Hollywood. She enjoyed staying in LA with the company of old men and Miles and who now seemed to forget about Jasper.
Amanda was having her own party alone when someone knocked. It was Iris’ older brother Graham, a book editor in Random House and a widower with 2 cute young girls. Then they had sex on first meeting and soon, sparks came flying around.
Iris learned to let go of Jasper and found solace in Miles who also got himself broke when Maggie cheated on him. Amanda, who always seems to push every guy found what she’s looking for in Graham.
I like what they did here to combine British and American culture. And what a great casting. Every character had their own unique personalities. And it was a surprise that they didn’t just focus on one protagonist but four. And amazing performances, simple yet very warm to make you feel good in the holidays. It was also very funny, thanks to Jack Black. Great movie during the holidays!
The Prince & Me
The Prince and Me,I really loved this. Luke Mably is such a handsome prince! They have great chemistry with Julia Stiles. I love this movie because they didn't make it seem like the usual and boring fairytale happy ending kind of movie. I like the way how the two leads met. Prince Edvard played by Luke Mably is the Crown Prince of Denmark. To escape his overbearing princely duties and from the eyes of the Danish paparazzis, he went to Wisconsin as an exchange student. There he meets Paige, a local farm girl studying at the University of Wisconsin. Eddie or Prince Edvard have mistaken Paige as one of the girls he saw on tv who's taking their clothes off. Despite the not so good first meeting, circumstances tend to bring them together. When Eddie first came to his Chemistry class, he sat beside Paige and unintentionally they're going to be lab partners.
But as things take its turn, Eddie finds himself helping Paige in her Literature class and Paige was helping him to be just like anybody else despite not knowing that he is a prince. During Thanksgiving, Paige invited Eddie to spend the week. Surprisingly, her parents and brothers welcome Eddie as a family. He gets along with his brother specially when he won the lawn mower race cause he fixed their lawn mower and made it faster. Paige, in a state of denial doesn't want to be bothered by his obvious chemistry with Eddie. Before going back they made out
( just kiss).
As they went back to school, their feelilngs toward each other started getting deeper. But until she found out that he was a real prince when the Danish paparazzis came snapping pictures of them at the library while the're kissing. Edvard suddenly needs to get back to Denmark for his ailing father. Paige soon follows him there and they are set to marry. But before she could be crowned Queen, she broke off the engagement and went back to Wisconsin.
On her graduation, she was surprised to see Edvard there. He asked her to marry him and was willing to wait for her.
What made this movie so romantic was the obvious chemistry between the two. They also both played their roles very well. I have to say that they did great with the casting. And tha location was great, even though they didn't actually shot in Denmark but in Prague. But most of all, I am so in love with the story. It's still a fairytale with a better new twist.One of the great finds in romantic movies.

HALF SWEET NOVEMBER
Nov. 6 – 9, 07
LUNCH IN THE RAIN
It’s a little weird how things came by for me this week. I t was after 6 grueling months before this meet up came to happen.
It was a very gloomy and rainy day when we first met again. The company I am working for was celebrating its 11th anniversary. I know, I wasn’t supposed to eat out but sure way I still did just because he asked me to eat lunch with him. We ate lunch together for 3 times at the same fast food KFC. I thought I was going to get wings for eating chicken most of the time. Luckily, I was spared to spend my money because he treated me out. So this means like I will always remember him during rainy lunchtime in Makati. And we even went to Makati together but it bothered me that he didn’t want to sit next to me.

SUNDAY FEELING
It was a Sunday noontime and after watching TV, I went downstairs to cook meals for lunch. My phone wasn’t with me that time because my not so close brother was using it.
Unknown to me, he sent me a message asking me to go with them with his sister to the mall, just malling. But other than that, he was calling. And to my dismay, my not so close brother even answered the call instead of giving it to me! It could have been ok if he answered it in a nice manner but he didn’t!
I wasn’t really in the mood for malling that time. I barely had rest the previous day cause I had work so I wanted to get a lot of sleep. But he was so eager this time for the first time to make me go. He said cause his sister wants me to be with them. I don’t really understand, he was just going to buy clothes and why should I even be there when he already had his sister with him to help him. I didn’t actually help him when we were there because you know, it’s awkward I’m not his girlfriend and never will be. But the best part was when we went to Red Ribbon, it was my first time and it was for free. And then we went home, he even asked me to go with them to church.
It really was the first time we ever did that even with his sister. It was a nice feeling seeing that we’re a lot comfy now together.

BUS RIDE
I was really bothered that he didn’t want to sit next to me. I even thought I owe him something like I have a contagious disease.
So Monday came, I knew it was his first day to work but I didn’t hear from him all day, not until past 6 in the evening. He was asking that we go home together. I thought his time off is 5:30. He was funny while we were at the bus cause he was standing. He was complaining that he was tired and now he’s standing. But the moment the guy sitting next to me took off, he went to sit beside me. I don’t know what to say cause I thought he didn’t want anything like that. We talked about stuffs. Like who’s Joanne’s secret former boyfriend who was our classmate then in high school. Like why I am not allowing them to come inside the house, that it was unfair. I enjoyed those little talks. We never usually do that.

Certified Personal Affection
A long time friend of mine and highschool classmate was one of the successful examinees in the recently CPA Oct. 2007 Board Exams. But coincidentally he wasn't just a friend of mine, he was my secret something. Ofcourse, I am very much proud of him, now as he is a new CPA, I think the feeling is a lot different if he was just a friend to me. And I am happy to know that I was one of the two persons among the friends he told about it. That just meant a lot to me. Considering that I am one of the two. The other one is his bestfriend whose also my highschool classmate.
I haven't really seen him for quite a long time now. We're both busy on our own. The chances that we see each other again is so slim. Most especially now that he'll be busy looking for a decent job right after the oath taking on Nov. 20 at 1pm at the PICC Plenary Hall. Right now, if there's someone I should thank that somehow we're still binded is his younger sister who's almost my newly adopted sister of my own. I talk to her more often than to him. According to one of my friend sources, since we're close ( his sister ), there's a tendency that we will be a you know more than friends thing. But because I'm a negative person as also told by two persons, him and Anna, I personally doubt this. And a gift that's from his sister not from him. Okay. How I wish really that it was from him?! I'm assuming.
But I am so happy for him. And I wish him all the best in the future because I care for him. That's it and because he' s my CPA.

REID and loving it!
Sept. 28 Friday
Dr. Spencer Reid - played by Matthew Gray Gubler
Watch him in Criminal Minds every Fridays 9:30 pm at Studio 23.
I'm really loving watching Criminal Minds! It's SUPER, even more than CSI. I just love Reid especially today's episode. He's so cute and so, I don't know, clumsy with girls and guns! He's the superhero today, and proved that he's more than a brainy guy.
The Behavioral Analysis Unit of FBI is investigating a series of celebrity murder. The suspect is a guy / girl with helmet who shots them in the head.Ironically, the victims are women who are look alikes of another celebrity named " Laila ". They thought it is a stalker who kills anyone who rivals Laila, his/her fantasy. But before the death of the look alike Natalie, Reid and the gang is in a gallery. Reid just met the beautiful Laila and they're just having a great talk together. She likes him, he likes him. Yey go REID! Back to the case, someone went to the FBI and reported a warning from an anonymous source. It was Laila who received a " You owe me" warning. Again, ironically, she and Reid met again. Then she walked out and he came after her. haha...
Then she received another warning while on the set. So came Reid and the gang. Gideon instructed him and Morgan to watch her. Reid approached Laila, then he apologized for being insensitive the night before. She said he doesn't need to cause he's just doing his job. Then she suddenly took his Coca Cola from him and drank from it before saying " You don't me mind me sharing don't you?" Reid said, " Sure. "Then she took her robe off and Reid was there looking at her. Then Morgan came and just repeated what she said. It was really funny, he doesn't seem to know what to do.
But the best part was when they were at her house. He was like, you have to do this and that. Then the swimming pool scene, she kissed and drag him to the pool. Reid, you got a jackpot! At first, he was uneasy about it but he got carried away until he told her that her manager died. Oh my God, Reid is going to have a scandal. Someone took pictures of them! Thanks to Morgan and Elle.
But Reid is a great FBI special agent. he lokk really tough when they found out that Maggie might be the insub. Yeah, Reid, you're the man! He was really cute, when he said to Maggie, " She loves me now, in the pool she kissed me and told me." hahaha... Reid, you're so great! And, he got Maggie without getting the need to shot her.
So they need to part ways. But they were having the very few last moments together in the sights of the paparazzi's. I thought he was going to kiss her. You should have kissed her Reid! He put his hand on her shoulder, and she put her cheek into it. Reid, you're the man again!
Funny when he saw pictures of their last moments. " Laila's Mystery Man!" He's confused is hje's goint to call her or not or if she really likes him.He put the magazine in the trash but quickly retrieves it to put in his drawer! They're cute together!!!!

Bad Half Day
I thought I was going to have a good day ahead. My boss had approved my proposal to take the 8:30 - 5:30 pm today. I have to go with my Mom cause she's heading back home to the province later today. I have done all she's asking me to do even before she even came. Then she asked me to make an intorduction of a couple business partner. She told me just like the one I had printed out before. So I thought of so mnay words just to make it like the one she told me to. Then when I gaver it to her, she told me she just needs atleast 3 to 5 sentences.
Okay, I deleted the rest of the paragraphs I did. But she still wasn't satisfied. Oh please, she should have told me earlier that she just needs 3-5 sentences so I shouldn't have wasted my effort thinking of words. If she didn't want any of my words then I think she should just do it herself right! I'm not being rude, I'm just saying the truth. Atleast, in her own words she can find what she's asking me that I can't give her. Don't take me wrong, I respect my boss cause she's nice you know aside from her very big loud ( i don't know ) kind of laugh that usually irritates other people there. And the fact that she's the least - like person there.But I have nothing against her okay. I mean she's a good boss,she's nice but sometimes she's so weird. She even asked Ms. Leizel the day before to ask Sir Jun to make a blueprint of Oct newsletter that's why we gave him a copy. Then she found out the next day. Voice of a Murderer
Korean Movie 2007
So far,the biggest hit of South Korea in 2007 surpassing all other hits before it. It's a true to life story of a kidnapping abduction case in 1991 of a 9 year old boy,son of a famous personality then. The boy was missing for 44 days and found dead at the Han River after the kidnapper had claimed almost $200,000 dollars to the parents. Until now,the kidnapper is still at large.This is a very great intense movie. A must see,you can't see anything like this great,only in Korea. The cast was absolutely superb but okay I admit I was only interested in this movie because of Kang Dong Won but other than that I really liked the movie. The way the story was told was extremely gripping. You can really feel the ruthlessness of the kidnapper. Thanks to Kang Dong Won's superb performance,and it's just his mean evil voice you hear all the time.And that laughter,who could forget it!The parents played by Kyung-gu Sol(Han Kyung-bae ) and Nam-ju Kim (Oh Ji-sun),absolutely amazing.I can really feel the anguish and pain of the parents. It's really heartbreaking to see their faces like that. The part where, Kyung-gu Sol, the father was running to the amusement park and he was praying,oh my God that really struck me.I even cried seeing his troubled face while praying for his son's safety. And the last part of the movie where he gets back to work,he cried infront of national television. God,I pity him so much.And the mother,when she waswalking and she suddenly loses consciousness in the middle of the road,she's like all the very bad things in the world is at her shoulder.But I must really praise Kang dong won for a very great ruthless performance and not just because I like him. This is another of his best, everyone agrees too!The whole movie was award winning,it's no surprise it's no. 1 at the box office.I sensed that the kid is already dead by the time that the kidnapper is asking for money.So sad, I thought he will give the kid back but I was wrong.2 thumbs up!You musn't miss this!!!

200 Pounds Beauty
I just recently finished watching 200 Pounds Beauty, a Korean movie last night through You Tube cause I haven't got the time to buy a dvd copy yet. First thing I have to say is that it's a very funny movie. Most of the time, you're laughing while watching the movie. What's so great about is,is that it's has a simple storyline. The director / writer didn't make it complicated just to make the story more appealing. It is much more appealing just as simple as it is. A overweight woman who is being deprive of everything despite her very strong voice just cause she's big. Then get's this chance of a lifetime to change her whole life through her overall plastic surgery. Like what I read last night,a review too said that it keeps to its identity as a comedy. Not like others that gets serious as the story goes on. It's a warm and touching story but it's not a drama movie. It makes you cry and makes you laugh as well.
The movie also showcases what could happen to someone who went through an overall extreme makeover. There was this scene in the movie where Sang Jun kisses Jenny and you know she stopped him from touching the wrong places cause she's terrified that Sang Jun might recognize that her boobs are implants,her nose is a fake and her hips is unnatural like what she claimed she is an all natural beauty. I just got into thinking that this exact situation might have also happened to those who had plastic surgery even not an overall surgery.There were also lots of funny scenes in the movie. Like when the people at the hospital tried to carry her to transfer to the other bed but couldn't cause she's so heavy,then she said she can just roll over.
The cast was great despite the fact that they we'rent as big as Song Hye Kyo, Kwon Sang Woo or whoever big Hallyu star in Korea.But they did a great job in this movie.Kim Ah Joong is such a beauty and what a voice she has. She's just perfect as Hanna which turned into Jenny. Her performance is so natural,it's effortless. I like the guy here as well,he's good looking and he did good job as the music producer/ love interest of Hanna. Another noted thing about the movie is its soundtrack. The songs are so great specially Maria and Byul.
So,last words I definitely recommend this movie. It's funny really and it's a very fun movie to watch. Buy the soundtrack too,you'll enjoy.
